Missing' Swiss Mother Kills Baby After Being Detained

Katharina Katit-Staheli

A Swiss woman slit her infant’s throat and tried to kill herself in a hospital in south-east Spain on Thursday after being detained by police following an international search.
Katharina Katit-Staheli, 40, had disappeared from Zurich with baby Dylan Katit, who was ten months old, on Christmas Eve, prompting authorities to put out a Europe-wide alert.

Spanish police traced Ms Katit-Staheli to a shopping mall in the resort of Torrevieja, south of Alicante on the Costa Blanca, on Wednesday after she was spotted by a Spanish woman.
She was immediately taken to hospital with the baby because of the concerns about his health.
Sources close to the investigation told Spanish news agency EFE the woman had killed her son after being given permission to bathe the infant before doctors gave him a thorough medical examination.

The mother was in a serious condition on Thursday. But Spanish Civil Guard they said they were unable to give more information because an investigating judge had placed a news black-out on the case, a common practise early-on in criminal investigations in Spain
