Man City go top with hard-fought win
Alvaro Negredo’s stoppage time goal, calmed Manchester
City’s nerves and sealed a 2-0 win over Newcastle at Saint James Park. It was a
controversial match, in which Cheick Tiote’s long range effort from ruled out,
because Yohan Gouffran was deemed to be interfering with play.
All this happened, after Edin Dzeko gave the visitors the
lead, with an emphatic finish from Kolarov’s cross.
In the second game, Liverpool overcame a resilient Stoke
City side 5-3 at the Britannia Stadium.
Ryan Shawcross’ own goal and Suarez’s instinctive effort
gave the Reds a two-goal lead, before Peter Crouch and Charlie Adams brought
the Potters level in the first half. Steven Gerrard converted from the spot,
after Raheem Sterling was adjudged to have been fouled. Suarez grabbed his
second of the evening, before Jon Walters poked in past Mignolet.
It was Danie Sturridge who had the last word, with an
audacious skill and finish in the last minute of normal time.
